Once a month The Theatre Centre hosts a Community Meal; a chance for our community to come together and share a delicious home-cooked meal!
Past scrumptious meals include Righteous Rubbed Ribs from our Technical Director/chef-extraordinaire Remington North, Homemade Lasagna made by our Artistic Director Franco Boni, Haleem (a scrumptious dish akin to an Indian stew) cooked up by Owais Lightwala, and a classic Seafood Boil (mmmm lobster)! March Community Meal with Screenings & Conversations

The Theatre Centre has an exciting March Community Meal programmed for you! Lisa Myers, Kelly Lui, Ama Amponsah and Cindy Pham will offer a delicious vegetarian meal along with a screening and conversation.
Cooking-as-Inquiry is a collaboration between food scholars, artists, and food advocates: Ama Amponsah, Kelly Lui, Lisa Myers, and Cindy Pham. This lunch will present food’s capacity to connect people with places, history, and a sense of belonging while thinking through issues of diaspora and displacement.
Kelly Lui will screen her sensitive portrayal of the kitchen as a place of labour, emotional care, and love in her video My Mother’s Kitchen. Cindy Pham’s documentary Grandma’s Recipes reveals the filmmaker building her knowledge of cooking, family history, and identity. Through storytelling, Ama Amponsah will convey memories of her Grandmother preparing food in Ghana. Lisa Myers will make food that recalls cooking with her Grandmother. Inspired by the idea of cooking-as-inquiry this lunch menu values learning by cooking with the cooks around us, and the generations that came before.

Vegetarian Menu will include:
- Vegetarian wontons served with chillies
- Roasted Mushrooms and squash
Blueberries with maple syrup and skaan (frybread)
Food is first-come, first-served, so make sure to arrive on time to avoid disappointment!
This March Community Meal is supported by Curated Properties, The Metcalf Foundation, and the Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University.
Ama Amponsah is an organizer and long time resident from the Jane and Finch community. She is the current Director at the Black Creek Community Farm and she is enrolled in the Masters of Environmental Studies program at York University.
Kelly Lui is currently finishing the Masters of Environmental Studies program at York University. Her research explores placemaking, spaces of intimacy, citizenship and storytelling through food. Her favourite food is any kind of noodle soup.
Lisa Myers is an independent curator and artist who teaches in the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University. Myers is a member of Beausoleil First Nation and her favourite dishes include mushrooms.
Cindy Pham is a graduate of the Bachelor of Applied Science in Nutrition and Food at Ryerson University and is currently studying in the Masters of Environmental Studies at York University. The focus of her research is in the utilization of media as a tool to further food activism and inquiry. She has worked in urban agriculture and food security projects throughout Toronto for over 6 years and has a keen interest in plant life. Her favourite food is bananas and she likes to embroider patches for her loved ones in her spare time.
