STITCH an a cappella opera by urbanvessel
May 26 - May 30, 2010
WED MAY 26-SUN MAY 30

Following a sold-out run at Free Fall 2008, Urbanvessel and The Theatre Centre present Stitch, an a cappella opera by maverick composer-librettist duo Juliet Palmer and Anna Chatterton. Ruth Madoc-Jones directs the sublime and wild voices of Christine Duncan, Patricia O'Callaghan and Neema Bickersteth.

"A rogue brace of creative spirits cuts through the couture and sweeps us straight into a sewing sweatshop in Stitch." John Terauds, Toronto Star

"An extraordinary melding of lyric singing, sung speech, and the whir of the sewing machines... new, different and stimulating." Michael Crabb, CBC Radio

"An artistic adventure." Kelly Nestruck, Globe & Mail

Hemmed in by the language of sewing and the inexorable rhythm of the machine, three women fight to find space for imagination and individuality. From the sweet 3-part stylings of “Cowl-neck Blues” to the fierce interlocked minimalism of “Chain stitch, Lock stitch, Whip stitch”, STITCH gives voice to the unseen women who clothe us all.
Outstanding Production, Opera, 2008 Dora Award nomination. Outstanding New Musical/Opera, 2008 Dora Award nomination

Stitch was developed in residence at The Theatre Centre.
