Tanya Tagaq + Post-Normal

Presented as part of Carbon 14: Climate is Culture Performance Series produced in partnership with Cape Farewell Foundation.

Internationally renowned contemporary Inuit artist Tanya Tagaq and Michael Red will join creative forces for an an evening of innovative, inspired musical performance. The evening will kick-off with a performance by Kitchener-based experimental-glam pop duo Post-Normal (K La Luna and Android M).

The artists set off to explore music’s capacity to express the embodied knowledge of socio-environmental change. Scientifically and artistically, they examine the awe-inspiring dynamics of the environment – like the sound of a flock of geese, or the rhythm of the changing Arctic tide – from Inuit and Western perspectives, on the local and global scale.

Both ancient and modern, Tanya Tagaq’s performances with long-time collaborator Michael Red fuse her highly personalized throat singing style with Red’s electronic sound art. When the two perform, Tagaq’s powerful, fervent vocals enmesh with layered rhythms and melodies built from Red’s collection of natural Arctic sonic elements (wind, ice, birds, etc.). The collaboration yields a fascinating, highly improvised mix of digital effects, dance and dub-inspired beats and bass, and shape shifting soundscapes.

As founding member of Lighta! Sound, Vancouver’s most well known bass music crew, Michael Red has played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s internationally recognized dubstep scene. When performing with Tanya Tagaq, all of Michael’s music is created from recordings collected from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut (Tanya’s home.)

Android M. (Andrea Mauro) is a full-time musician living in Ontario. She is a trained classical flautist and pianist. Andrea connects with others via music, whether through composing, performing, or as a teacher/student. Andrea is currently finishing her Associates Diploma through the Royal Conservatory of Music in piano performance.

K La Luna (Kaitlyn Rathwell) is an environmental change doctoral candidate at the University of Waterloo. She is also a practicing performance artist. La Luna combines her love of and expression through the arts with her scientific background, creating art + science alchemy.
