PJ Prudat

PJ Prudat has begun exploring a number of exciting ideas and big questions at a shifting moment in her creative practice, as she finishes post-graduate work in creative writing, and recent opportunities working as a director. She and Aislinn Rose will be working together closely in the coming year, and recently had the opportunity to begin exploring while participating in a Canadian delegation of artists and presenters in Korea & Hong Kong.

PJ Prudat was born in a fierce snowstorm near Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan (Treaty 6). She is a proud Métis~nehiyaw~saulteaux, a traditional ceremonial helper, poet, writer, director, arts educator, and a-soon-to-be published children’s literary author.  PJ is a daughter of the fur trade; her matrilineal ancestors, four generations back, travelled by dog team, were Buffalo hunters, Résistance Fighters, and Treaty Six Hereditary Chief signatories.

PJ holds Artistic Residencies with Nightswimming, The Theatre Centre and previously with Native Earth Performing Arts.  With over thirty years of professional work on stage, PJ has toured luminous IBPOC-creative-led shows nationwide. She is among the first ever Indigenous Kwe/women to hold space as a Company Actor at the National Arts Centre and the Shaw Festival. Twice nominated for both the KM Hunter Award and the Johanna Metcalf Performing Arts Prize, she has also garnered a Jesse Richardson Award nomination for her work on the solo show Moonlodge (Urban Ink). She is a poet, writer, director, arts educator, playwright, theatre creator and a-soon-to-be published children’s literary author.  Dreaming, decolonizing, fighting the patriarchy, Indigenous youth/elder advocacy— reclamation of songs, ceremony, language and ancestral stories in relationship with community—galvanize her spirit.   PJ is currently working on her MFA in Creative Writing at UBC.  Kitatamihinâwâw.
