After the sold out, award winning run of Suddenly Last Summer, and the site-specific, haunting success of SAMCA, Riot King is back to present the Tony award-winning play RED; a thrilling two-hander, starring Lindsay Merrithew and Brendan Kinnon, about American abstract painter Mark Rothko and the creation of the Seagram Murals.
RED, written by John Logan and directed by Kenzia Dalie, reflects on what it means to create a space for contemplation. What can art teach us about finding the balance? How can we use it to process complex emotions and work through our trauma? From prepping canvases and mixing pigments to their symbiotic dance of painting, Rothko and his new assistant Ken are weighed in the balance, challenging each other on art, life and what it means to be human.
This production features an all-star design team including Kenzia Dalie, Kit Norman, and Kathleen Welch. RED will also feature original oil paintings by abstract painter Ian Harper.

Founded in 2019, Riot King is an experimental arts hub producing theatre and community events in the physical and digital space with the goal of building a stronger arts community for all. Riot King received their first Dora Award for their production of Suddenly Last Summer in 2024, and recently produced the outdoor roaming production of the dark folklore play SAMCA in Toronto to rave reviews. We are dedicated to showcasing the beauty of the natural world through art and producing theatre in a sustainable way which doesn’t leave a negative impact on the land we perform on.
