Between a Wok and a Hot Pot

By Amanda Lin

A Cahoots Theatre Production

Age Recommendation 13+
This show contains strong language which may not be suitable for younger audiences.

Bubble tea. Kimchi. Hot pot.

It’s cool to be Asian right now.

While preparing a traditional hot pot onstage, Amanda reminisces for her audience about when it wasn’t so cool to be Asian, and delves into the complicated topic of cultural identity and appropriation through food and art. As pressure builds and the show comes crashing down around her, Amanda must come face to face with the question: What does it mean to be authentic, and does it even matter?

Between a Wok and a Hot Pot is generously supported by

The Wuchien Michael Than Foundation.

Please note the following show-specific protocols for Between a Wok and a Hot Pot:

  1. Ticket buyers purchasing food-inclusive tickets consent to on-site, day-of-show COVID testing, and must arrive for the time printed on their ticket. Food-inclusive tickets have a start time 30 minutes earlier than non-food tickets in order to accommodate testing. Anyone who does not wish to test on site may purchase show-only tickets.
  2. Ticket buyers purchasing food-inclusive tickets will be seated at tables of either 2 or 4.  If the number of tickets purchased is greater or fewer than a complete table, the buyer is consenting to members of their party being seated with people they do not know.
  3. Due to the communal nature of hot pot, meat and vegetarian tables are separate.  A ticket buyer who chooses the meat option and attends with someone vegetarian is consenting to being seated at two different tables.
  4. Ticket buyers with specific food allergies (including those with an allergic reaction to smell, even if they have non-food tickets), should contact The Theatre Centre box office with inquiries regarding the ingredient list.
