lifeDUETs

Produced by Kaeja d’Dance

In 1998, Karen and Allen Kaeja embarked on lifeDUETs – a duet-commissioning series. Variations of that critically acclaimed program toured throughout Canada, the US, Europe, Asia, Central and South America. Now, over a decade later, we are very excited to breathe life into a new program of lifeDUETs for our 25th anniversary. Including commissions from incomparable choreographers Tedd Robinson and Benjamin Kamino, this program is a celebration of one of Canada’s premiere dancing duos.

“An enthusiastic Allen; a calming Karen; an over industrious couple who on breaks (I frequently suggested to them that they work too hard as they sat at their computers jointly working); too many suggestions at times, but always better than no help at all; a dedicated couple who have worked hard who know each other’s next move (which makes things go fast); a studio with a no-grudge atmosphere, but a bit of revealing gossip which is always good for the blood pressure and a laugh at my age and no I will not tell and neither will they; comfortable.” – Tedd Robinson

“The dance we are making is made from the time these two dancers have spent with each other. Through telepathy, meditation, and closure we practice becoming the other in order to access the myriad of dances unknown to the other yet existent in their unknowing. If love is a light, then it must always be shaded in darkness; humanity’s darkness, selfhood’s darkness, the darkness of trust/mistrust… and of course the darkness of the future. This dance, slow becoming, is a wandering though darkness in search of the light we feel to be real through our loving acts and yet will never touch in life.” Benjamin Kamino

Don’t miss lifeDUETs – a celebration of family, of company, of love and partnership.

“Some of my all-time favourite moments have been when something hilariously awkward happens in public and I catch the eyes of a stranger and for a second we know exactly what each other is thinking. And then we go about our lives. It’s a beautiful intimacy.” For actor, director, and writer Gregory Prest, even a...
