Mumbai Theatre Artist Meets Toronto
A conversation with Quasar Padamsee, a.k.a “Q” – a theatre artist and visiting friend with some interesting things to say on theatre in Mumbai and beyond.
Leading theatre director and producer from one of the largest cities in India, Quasar Padamsee, will be paying a visit to Toronto for several days at the end of June. Paprika Festival Artistic Producer, Dan Daley, and Why Not Theatre Artistic Director, Ravi Jain invite you to join them in an intimate conversation with “Q”, on what he and his company – Q Theatre Productions – have been up to. As well, the conversation will extend onto a wider perspective of theatre and the performing arts in Mumbai and across India. Leading artists from Toronto’s own performing arts community are expected to be in attendance for this important exchange.
Quasar Thakore Padamsee is an Indian stage actor turned theatre director, designer and stage manager. Both his parents, Alyque Padamsee and Dolly Thakore, are renowned stage actors. Since 1999, Q has directed and produced over 20 plays with his theatre company, Q Theatre Productions. Most recently he directed A Peasant of El Salvador and So Many Socks. He was the Assistant Director of Tim Supple’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Other selected credits include, The Night Thoreau Spent in Jail, Minorities and All My Sons.
Q Theatre Productions is a Bombay based theatre unit dedicated to concerned & vibrant productions. Born in a classroom at St. Xavier’s college, Q Theatre Productions (QTP) is a product of the student theatre system of Bombay. Now 11 years on, the core group is still the same with a few additions. At present the group is run by Arghya Lahiri, Christopher Samuel, Nadir Khan, Toral Shah and Quasar Thakore Padamsee, with scores of volunteers and theatre enthusiasts floating in and out as and when their schedule allows. There are also members all over the world, arming themselves with theatre education to return and service the Indian theatre scene. One of QTP’s signature projects is Thespo, a national youth-led theatre festival in Mumbai which features the work of hundreds of young artists under the age of 25.
At present QTP is one of the busiest theatre units in the country with recent projects resulting in international tours to Italy, Australia, United States, Muscat and the United Kingdom. Four of QTP’s plays are still running on the Bombay circuit – The President is Coming, Project S.T.R.I.P., Some Girl(s) and Khatijabai of Karmali Terrace. QTP also specialises in corporate events to subsidise their productions. Recent clients have included Microsoft, YPO, Hyatt Regency, Manhattan Credit Cards, Sandoz, Cadbury’s ICICI, Unilever and Tata Motors.
