Screen, Sketch, Share with Jim Libiran

Presented by The Theatre Centre, part of ArtWorksTO.

Known for his fearless exploration of urban grit and untold narratives, Jim Libiran is a filmmaker and writer who has covered a wide range of topics all around the world. His debut feature, Tribu, has earned 15 international and local awards, including the Festival Paris Cinema’s Pari de l’Avenir.

As one of this year’s participants in ArtWorksTO: Newcomer Program, Jim is bringing Screen, Sketch, Share to The Theatre Centre April 13-June 1. These FREE community nights are intended for audiences of all ages. No prior film or drawing experiences are necessary. Participants can choose to interact as little as they’d like. Introverts are especially welcome. This is an evening where you are invited to watch, doodle, and speak as much or as little as you like.

Six selected shorts from the NFB Archives that explore a range of Canadian films, including documentaries and animations, will offer conversation starters. The goal is simple: see some amazing Canadian shorts, sketch together, and leave feeling a little more connected than you did when you arrived.

Jim Libiran is a Toronto-based multidisciplinary artist working across film, journalism, poetry, and community arts. A former broadcast journalist who reported from Iraq, Afghanistan, and Mindanao, he brings sociological rigor and lived experience to his storytelling.

His practice blends verismo filmmaking with community engagement and adult education, creating participatory works rooted in social realities. Longlisted for the 2025 CBC Nonfiction Prize, he co-founded Kapwa Cultural Initiatives and is a Toronto Arts Council Newcomer Artist Program grant recipient.
