The Merchant of Venice

Presented by Shakespeare BASH’d

Shakespeare BASH’d presents one of the most controversial and divisive plays ever written: The Merchant of Venice.

Led by Alon Nashman in the role of Shylock, this passionate group of predominantly Jewish artists will investigate the antisemitism, xenophobia, and racism in this play, asking how we can make something new and reflect the world we see in front of us?

Full of complicated ideas, characters, and contexts, the production will challenge the audience to reflect, while enjoying Shakespeare’s moving and extravagant text.

Featuring an all-star cast including BASH’d regulars, multiple award winners, and Toronto theatre favourites, audiences are invited to join us in our examination of this demanding play.

Don’t miss this intimate, compelling production, by NOW Magazine’s “Best Site-Specific Theatre Company” (2018 & 2019).

“Some of my all-time favourite moments have been when something hilariously awkward happens in public and I catch the eyes of a stranger and for a second we know exactly what each other is thinking. And then we go about our lives. It’s a beautiful intimacy.” For actor, director, and writer Gregory Prest, even a...

“The difference between Versus and my other shows is that this one is a celebration of community while the other ones were me trying to punch people in the face to say, “wake up.” Rather, it’s me saying, “we’re all like this guy, it’s tough, so let’s keep walking forward together.” Residency Artist, Adam Lazarus,...
