The Virgin, Mary

Presented by Sheep’s Clothing Theatre and Doormouse Productions

In 1994, lesbians Mary and Jo travel from their hometown in rural Newfoundland to the ruins of the Temple of Hera in Samos, Greece. Although Jo believes they have taken this journey for the sake of studying for her oh-so-important archaeological dissertation, Mary has a different plan- to pray to the goddess Hera for a biological child. Unable to adopt or marry, this baby is Mary’s last chance to prove that her and Jo can be a “real family.” However, Hera has other plans, and the trio are thrust into a confrontation that forces them to reckon with the definitions of family, faith and the miracle of love.

The Virgin, Mary explores queer parenthood through the eyes of two young women who navigate a society that refuses to recognize them as a family. A whirlwind one-act that examines queer motherhood, The Virgin, Mary asks the question- will our world ever truly change?

“The difference between Versus and my other shows is that this one is a celebration of community while the other ones were me trying to punch people in the face to say, “wake up.” Rather, it’s me saying, “we’re all like this guy, it’s tough, so let’s keep walking forward together.” Residency Artist, Adam Lazarus,...
